About The Urge
St. Louis-based ska-punk-alt-rock outfit, The Urge, was formed in 1987 by vocalist Steve Ewing and bassist Karl Grable, with the current lineup of Matt Kwiatkowski, Bill Reiter, John Pessoni, and Jerry Jost solidifying in the early 1990s.
After independently recording and releasing four albums - "Bust Me Dat Forty" (1987), "Puttin' the Backbone Back" (1990), "Magically Delicious" (1992), and the live "Fat Babies in the Mix" (1993) - the band's raucous live reputation, as well as national radio airplay, brought them to the attention of Immortal Records, who re-released their 1995 cult-classic "Receiving the Gift of Flavor" through Epic Records in 1996.
Constant touring throughout the U.S. and eventually throughout Europe, with friends 311, Korn, Deftones, No Doubt and Incubus, as well as radio airplay from Receiving the Gift of Flavor singles, “Brainless” and “All Washed Up,” built an enthusiastic and rabid fan base for the band.
1998 marked the release of “Master Of Styles,” the band’s second release for Immortal/Epic, which included the Top 10 Alternative Rock song “Jump Right In” featuring Nick Hexum of 311, as well as radio hit “Closer” and a classic live crowd favorite “Straight To Hell.”
After their last Immortal Records release ”Too Much Stereo" in 2000, The Urge took an extended hiatus for several years before reuniting in 2011 to independently release the live CD/DVD "All the Way Live/Live and Direct" (2012), a new studio release "Galvanized" (2013) and "Receiving The Gift Of Flavor Live - 20th Anniversary (Re-Recorded Live Before A Studio Audience)" (2015) which was also celebrated by the collaborative release of the Public House Brewing Company beer, “The Gift Of Flavor.”
In the Summer of 2018, the band was commissioned by the St. Louis Blues, to record a new goal song for the NHL team. It was that season which won the hockey team their first Stanley Cup Championship. The song, entitled “The Blues Have The Urge Goal Song” continues to be used by the team to celebrate each and every goal at all home games. 2025 marked the 30th Anniversary of the independently studio released cult-classic “Receiving the Gift of Flavor” and the 25th Anniversary of “Too Much Stereo.” The band celebrated the year with several shows, including some reunion show dates with their friends 311, including several festival appearances.
The band shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. As their crowds always chant, “PTMFUS!”
About Less Than Jake
From sweaty club shows to uproarious festival dates, Less Than Jake’s deeds are best measured in the smiles they’ve generated for life-long fans and new listeners alike. Uncharted, the ska-punkers’ brand new 7 song EP released by longtime label Pure Noise Records, should help keep those smiles tattooed on the faces of their fans. The new material is stacked with loud guitars, booming bass, thunderous drums, those distinct vocal harmonies, and the one-two punch of the trombone and sax. These seven tracks see the band conquering new musical territory, while holding true to the classic Less Than Jake sound. Indeed, Less Than Jake —guitarist/vocalist Chris DeMakes, bassist/vocalist Roger Lima, trombonist Buddy Schaub, saxophonist Peter “JR” Wasilewski and drummer Matt Yonker —may have been at this for over three decades, but with the energy and spirit of this new EP, you would never know it. The recording sessions were helmed by Jason Livermore and legendary drummer/producer Bill Stevenson (Black Flag, Descendents, ALL). Stevenson and crew harnessed Less Than Jake’s urgency and helped capture their frenetic live energy on this eclectic collection of new material.
